October Local Hero

Our Local Hero for October OPS is Nick Fernando.

Born in eastern Tennessee, Nick began studying the bagpipes at the age of twelve under John Shell. They have been a passion since day one! Every year, Nick attends the North American Academy of Piping, receiving excellent tutelage from Sandy Jones and Ed Neigh. He is currently studying with Colin MacKenzie in Lake Oswego, Oregon for Piobaireachd.

Throughout his piping career, Nick has played in the Grandfather Mtn. Highlanders (5 years), The Charleston Police Pipes and Drums (2 years), and most recently with The Portland Metro Pipe Band (2 years). Says Nick, "Though I consider myself primarily a non competitive player, I do enjoy the competitive scene, and am hoping to get back into formal competition soon."

Held at the OddFellows Hall in Milwaukie, competition begins at 4:30 pm and evening performance begins at 7:30 pm. Admission is $5 for OPS members. $10 for non-members. Become a member today!

October Pipe Band

At the October 18th Oregon Pipers Society, Oregon State Defense Force Pipe Band will be joining us. We look forward to them performing for us!

Formed after WW II by returning GI's, Oregon State Defense Force Pipe Band was originally sponsored
by the Oregon National guard. Now based in Salem, Oregon, the band has grown and serves the
community by providing entertainment through traditional Scottish music.

They offer free instruction in pipe and drum development and play at several military oriented
ceremonies each year. They are also available for parades, concerts, Celtic festivals and the solo pipers
for weddings and funerals and other events.

Held at the OddFellows Hall in Milwaukie, competition begins at 4:30 pm and evening performance begins at 7:30 pm. Admission is $5 for OPS members. $10 for non-members. Become a member today!
