November 15th OPS Featured Performer

Join us on November 15th for the second OPS meeting of the season. Our featured performer of the night will be Brian McKenzie.

Brian was brought up in the Highlands of Scotland and has been playing the pipes for 25 years.

He was primarily taught by P/M Andy Venters while he was in school. P/M Andy Venters was the Pipe Major of the Queens Own Highlanders from 1975-1982 and served 22 years in the military before teaching in the schools on the Black Isle (where Brian lived) until he retired. Other influences on his playing are the late P/M Alasdair Gillies and P/M Michael Gray (1st Battalion, The Highlanders).

Brian played in the Black Isle Junior Pipe band while in High School and then after attending Glasgow University he got a 3 month attachment to the regiment 1st Battalion, The Highlanders. This enabled him to play on their North American tour in 2003 where they did 50 shows in 65 days all over the United States…an amazing experience! Brian continued to play with the band in competition the following season in Grade 2. Currently, Brian is a member of the Portland Metro Pipe Band and graded Professional in the BCPA.

Some of his solo competition highlights include - 1st Silver Medal at Winter Storm Kansas City; 3rd - Dunvegan Medal – Skype (this past summer); Numerous placing in the 'B' grade light music events at the Argyllshire Gathering in Oban. Brian travels back most years to compete in the solos at Oban and Inverness.

Brian currently works in IT and lives in Seattle. Learn more about Brian at BagpiperInSeattle.com.
